Wheel Spacers – Quick FAQs

Are Wheel Spacers safe?

Wheel Spacers are safe as long as they are installed properly.  This means adhering to torque specs from the vehicle manufacturer, and our included torque specs.   Hub Centric spacers are a “like factory” fit.  This is the safest type of wheel spacer you can buy.

What are Wheel Spacers?

Wheel spacers space the wheels away from the vehicle hub. This creates more clearance in order to install new wheels, suspension upgrades, and brake upgrades. Wheel spacers are also used for aesthetics only.

US vs Them

US Wheel Adapters custom builds using all American HAAS machinery. We use 6061-T6 billet aluminum that is extruded and not cast forged. This makes for a stronger more uniform aluminum. Our studs are 10.9 grade hardness cold rolled. Hard and versatile (also US made). USWA also stocks lug centric and hub centric styles for many different vehicles and applications.

What is “Hub Centric” vs “Lug Centric”

Simply put “hub centric” means centering around the hub. Hub centric spacers will also have a protruding hub machined into them Spacers that fit tight to the hub like a factory wheel are referred to as “hub centric”. This style will also feature a simulated hub pilot machined onto the face side that receives the wheel. Best described as a Male – Female fit,  this precise machining guarantees the wheel centers true to the axle. This makes for a smooth ride, guaranteed. This also makes them 100% safe for on-road and off-road use.  Lug centric spacers on the other hand center using only acorn style lug nuts that are torqued into a tapered seat. This is not as reliable of a method for centering so lug centric spacers can experience vibration issues going faster speeds, especially highway speeds. We highly recommend Hub Centric over Lug centric adapters for real world applications such as hauling, towing, or long drives. Lug centric adapters or spacers can NOT be made hub centric with the addition of a ring or any machine modification.

-Bolt On Style Spacers

Bolt on style widen the stance on our cars, trucks, & SUVs with a spacer that bolts on to your vehicle just like a wheel does. This style will also have studs coming out of the face side that act as the new studs for your wheels.  These spacers are also commonly used to fix large backspacing & clearance issues.  Spacers will keep the same bolt pattern as the vehicle. Bolt on Spacers are available in two designs, hub centric and lug centric. Bolt-on hub centric wheel spacers are the best setup for truck & SUV. Hub Centric spacers pilot by the hub of the vehicle. This means they center on the hub of the vehicle while simulating the piloting lip on the face side.  Lug Centric would mean they are centered only by the lug nuts. ‘Bolt-on’ style bolt to the hub of the vehicle using the factory studs and provided lug nuts.  The wheel is then secured to the new studs using the factory lug nuts already on hand. If you are trying to fit the wheel of one factory vehicle to the hub of a different vehicle, or are attempting to change the bolt pattern then you are looking for a Wheel Adapter. – Wheel Adapters are found here.

-Slip On Style Spacers

‘Slip-on’ style spacers slide over the existing studs and do not have studs installed into the face side. This means it is important to make sure that there will be enough thread left past the spacer for secure installment of wheel. Otherwise, you will need extended studs. The rule of thumb is to have 7-8 turns on each lug nuts before securing to torque spec. We recommend OnTrackPerformanceParts.com OR SummitRacing.com for extended wheel studs. These slip-on spacers can also be hub centric meaning they will center on the vehicle hub and have a lip to pilot the wheels.  Hub Centric slip-on spacers are best used on Cars.

How do I check for minimal clearance?

Although the minimum thickness for slip on style hub centric spacers running factory wheels will be 3mm thicker than the vehicles hub stands tall. This is in order to clear the existing hub lip or ‘flange’ found at the center of the hub. The minimum thickness is 5mm for vehicles using aftermarket wheels with a larger center bore. This is because when the wheel bore is larger, the spacers may be bored straight through, avoiding these clearance issues found when spacing factory wheels with a matching hub and wheel bore. Also Available as a flat spacer plate or with “no-lip” when minimal clearance does not allow a hub centric lip.
